Carbon Capture and Utilization
The rate of fossil fuel replacement with renewables is increasing yearly, but the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will be too slow to meet the global goals of 1.5C warming and net-zero emissions by 2050. Thus, CO2 in the atmosphere must be removed and sequestered somehow, and energy efficiency must be increased to reduce emissions. Many ways have been proposed to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, such as:
-- Restoring/increasing the capacity of ecosystems to absorb and store CO2 (e.g. reforestation; seaweed farming; regenerative agriculture; adding fertilizers to the oceans to increase carbon uptake by plankton);
-- Carbon capture from emission sources and sequestration in geological repositories;
-- Carbon capture and utilization in products, such as: syngas feedstocks that would replace fossil feedstocks; consumer products like plastics, alcohols, jet fuels, and human/animal foods. Most of these are technically feasible, but not yet commercialized.
