Green vs Fossil Jobs
Economics is driving the rapid increase in green jobs, and the decrease in fossil-fuel jobs. In most areas of the world, building new renewable energy sources is cost-competitive or cheaper than using existing fossil-fueled power plants. However, the renewable energy sources are more labor intensive to build and operate, creating more jobs per $$ invested and more jobs per unit of energy produced. Currently in the U.S., there are 3x as many jobs in renewable energy compared to fossil energy. Fossil energy jobs have been declining for many years due to mechanization of the industry, and now due to the rapid expansion of renewables. Examples of the renewable energy job multiplier (extra jobs per $$ invested compared to fossil) in the U.S. are: solar 2.5 and wind 2.8.
