Original Painting “Home” by Charlotte Schuld

St. Paul Area Synod

The St. Paul Area Synod Care of Creation Work Group has been gifted a work of art from Stillwater’s own Charlotte Schuld, wife of team member Don Schuld.  The original painting, entitled “Home”, created in 2008, has been reproduced on a banner which will be on display at St. Andrew’s in Mahtomedi for their annual Caring for Creation Sunday and again at the Synod Assembly, May 16 - 17.  If you would like to see this beautiful banner on display at your own church for a period of time, let a member of the work group know and we can begin a rotation of the piece throughout the region.

Here is the Artist Statement:

Universals Series by Charlotte Schuld
In my “Universals” series I explored how I could understand, and show through my work, what I believe all humankind shares. I believe we are all more alike than different, and that the path to a peace-filled life is when we understand and believe that there is a power greater than ourselves, and a “Universal” awareness to be learned.
As I began my studies, and to help me visualize my beliefs, I narrowed my focus to Calls, Desires, and Needs. I have completed 8 paintings: “Calls” I: Believe, II: Celebrate, “Desires” I: Home, II: Joy, and “Needs” I: Hope, II: Trust, III: Peace, and IV: Change.
Within the image of “Universal Desire I: Home” I included imagery to convey the depth of our desire for a home, which I believe goes to the cellular level in each of us. Originally, I thought of Home as being a Need-but realized the need is for shelter—but the heart longs and desires for “Home”.
Imagery included in “Home” is a feather that is caressing and sheltering over the nest area. This represents the Holy Spirit which is so often shown as a dove. The nest symbolizes a home structure and the earth globe included in the unknown and undiscovered “otherness” that might be in the universe.
Ghosted throughout the background is the word “Home”, a molecular DNA pattern, and the carbon atom’s orbital pattern made by the rotation of the neutrons and protons. I felt a powerful desire to include this pattern in particular understanding we are all carbon-based. This pattern in the top right corner also spoke to me as being symbolic of a crucifix.
My continued desire is for my work to give inspiration to others.

“A community needs a soul if it is to become a true home for human beings. You, the people, must give it this soul."

-Pope John Paul II (1920-2005)

“Home, the spot of earth supremely blest, a dearer, sweeter spot than all the rest."

-Robert Montgomery
